| Hoover sells residential and commercial trusses
to outside customers, along with other construction materials. Ron is quick
to point out however, that the company sells "only materials that relate
directly to post-frame construction. We sell trusses, steel, trim , flashings,
insulation and related materials, along with completed post-frame packages
to do-it-yourselfers, and to small contractors who resell buildings to end
users." The fact that Hoover hasn't concentrated more in traditional buildings
is somewhat surprising because the company is located in a large poultry
area. According to Ron, "We supply a lot of trusses to that industry,
but have never gotten into that type of construction ourselves. We've concentrated
on commercial and back yard work and hobby shops primarily. But we've also
built a few post-frame homes that feature metal roofing and siding." |
different in the area we serve, its that each
building official seems to interpret code previsions differently. "We
have 40-some counties in the state and it seems none of them interpret the
Southern Building Code the same way." Like most enterprising companies
however, the Hoovers have found a way to grow and prosper.
"We began on a 3-acre site on 1972," notes Ron, "but eventually outgrew it. We moved to the present 10-acre facility, two miles southeast of Lexington, South Carolina on Old Two Notch Road, in 1984. The move enabled us to expand the business, as well as the wholesale and retailing of post-frame building components." To accommodate growing customer request, Ted and Ron diversified again in 1987, including a line of pre-engineered steel buildings. Originally marketed under the name Midland Metal Buildings, area customers are now familiar with the Hoover Metal Buildings name. |
